Dry Body Brushing for Healthy, Glowy Skin

Updated: Jul 16, 2021

Dry body brushing is such an amazing tool for skin health and detoxification by increasing your circulation and getting the lymphatic system moving. When you consider that our skin is our largest organ and plays an important role in the detoxification process, it makes sense to support our skin health and regeneration with dry body brushing for beautiful, glowy skin.

The pressure and sweeping motion of the brush along your skin helps to remove and break up dead skin cells, plus stimulates the movement of toxins, pathogens and waste through the lymphatic system, which doesn’t have a pump like our blood circulation does (the heart), so it relies on our physical movement and pressure to move this waste around and out of the body.

By including this practice up to 3 times per week, you may notice potential benefits, including:

  • Improved detoxification of the skin

  • Lymphatic stimulation for effective waste and toxin removal

  • Increased circulation for nutrient delivery to the skin

  • May promote a more even distribution of fat to the area

  • Improves blood circulation to prevent cold hands and feet

When you consider that our body accumulates toxins in fatty tissue, especially when liver function is congested (we may see this with certain nutrient deficiencies, genetic alterations, excess toxin exposure, hormone imbalance, poor gut health, etc), we can see how using dry body brushing in combination with a healthy diet full of fibre, hydration, regular exercise and healthy lifestyle practices may reduce the appearance of cellulite over time (although the jury is still out on this).

How To Dry Body Brush

You’ll need a dry body brush or massage brush (I recommend this brush which has a handle for easy manoeuvring). Each morning, using a firm (but not hard) pressure, sweep the brush over your skin moving in a direction towards your chest. Start gently to begin with, then over the next week or so you may be able to press more firmly as you get used to the practice.

Begin by sweeping upwards along the skin from your feet towards your torso, from your hands upwards towards your shoulders, from your neck downwards, and from your lower abdomen upwards. Give each area a good sweep with the brush a few times before moving on to the next area. You can concentrate on any problem areas by gently brushing in a circular motion over the area. When you’re done, simply jump into a warm shower and wash as you normally would. The warm water does the rest of the work for you by getting blood flowing.

Follow up your shower with a natural hydrating moisturiser such as coconut oil or this delicious body oil spray which contains a natural blend of coconut oil and essential oils.

Incorporating dry body brushing into your regular routine is such a beautiful self-care practice which comes with it's rejuvenating skin health benefits. Tell me, will you give this a try? Are you already a fan of dry body brushing? Let me know in the comments!
